Pre Pitch  Mental Thoughts

  • Know how many outs there are
  • Knowing the count on the batter can help you get into better position to make a play
    • e.g. 0-2 count - patter is protecting might be more apt to go to the opposite field so outfielder would move over and in
    • e.g. 3-1 count matters more aggressive so might want to see back and play straight or shade to pull
  • Know where the baserunners are if any
  • Go over possible situations if ball is hit to you
  • Take alignment according to the batter and the count
  • Anticipate where you will need to make throws on different base hits
  • Be prepared to back up bases when needed
    • any throws to first, second, or third needs to have an outfielder backing up
  • Take into consideration the wind and other conditions
  • Runner at 1st

if the ball is hit to you must be sure you can throw baserunner out a third,
