Groundball to Throwing Hand Side ()

Balls to the left/right

Many times we are not able to get over in front of groundballs, flyballs, or linedrives.  In these instances we must do the best we can at getting to the ball with the best pursuit angle and get rid of the ball as quickly as we can.

Open step towards the side the ball is hit and cross over
  • Create a good pursuit angle
  • Whether the ball is the left or right be thinking about where the ball is going after fielding once the ball has been fielded
  • When approaching the ball to the backhand side or forehand side the last few steps should be breaking down and stopping your momentum
  • When momentum is under control and the ball is being picked up, we should be creating momentum to the base we are making the throw to
  • On a ball to the forehand side we can reverse pivot (turn our back to the infield) to redirect our momentum
  • For more advanced players there might be the option of sliding feet first to stop the ball and also stop the momentum quickly (it is a difficult play and wouldn’t recommend trying in a game without practice)
