Double Play Drill ()
Double Play Drill
Objective: To work on turning the double play at second focusing on different locations on ground balls. Be sure to mix it up so that the players have worked on every possible play.
Setup: both middle infielders, coach, baseballs and having someone catching the balls at first base is optional
Execution: The coach should be located somewhere in between the pitcher\'s mound and second base. He needs to be in a position where he can either throw ground balls or hit ground balls to either the second baseman or the shortstop. The coach should challenge the players by making them work to their left to the right and right at them. The goal is to get a lot of reps but to still make the drill as game like as possible.
Coaching keys: you want to get lots of repetitions but you don\'t want to sacrifice fundamentals and the form that it takes to execute the drill properly. Make sure the players are turning a double play by catching the ball with two hands. The throws or feeds should be chest high so makes it easier for the guy turning the double play to do so. Remind infielders that when they get the ball hit to them they need to be thinking ahead So that when they field the ball they\'re in a good position to make the throw to second.
The underhand feed to second base is used when a ground ball takes the second baseman towards the base.
This play is used when the ball takes the second baseman hard to the left.
This play is similar to the underhand flip and is used when the ball is hat at you or toward the base.
