Groundball Fundamental Drill ()

Fundamental Drill

Objective: This drill will help all infielders break down and focus on the fundamentals of fielding a ground ball.  It slows down the footwork that is needed as we approach and work through the ground ball.

Setup: baseball, glove, someone to roll the groundball

Execution: The player and coach should be about 10-15 yards apart.  The player should be in an athletic fielding position with their left foot back a little behind the right foot.  (This gets us in the position we should be in right before the ball gets to us when we field a ground ball.) The coach then rolls a ball directly at the player.  When the ball is arriving at the player, he should be down in a good fielding position and stepping into the ground ball with his left foot.  He should then follow the left step with the shuffle to get into a good throwing position.

Coaching Keys:  Look for consistency.  Make sure the player isn’t trying to go too fast.  The drill is to work on the break down of the fundamentals of fielding so make sure they are doing the drill the right way.  You can change the drill up and add a player to throw the ball to.  It’s recommended not to add the player to throw to until the fielding player can execute the drill correctly.  Be sure that the player is in a good stance, stepping through the ball correctly, and shuffling correctly without crossing
