One Knee Drill ()
One Knee Drill
Objective: This drill will help a hitter learn to use their hands better and will force them to quit using too much body in their swing. It will also help them work down through the baseball.
Setup: Bat, baseballs
Execution: The hitter will get down on their back knee with their front leg extended out front. The coach or whoever is tossing the ball sets up to the side and a little out front. They will toss the ball just like in side soft toss.
Coaching Keys: Work on taking the bat from the start down the same angle that their front leg makes when it is extended out front. This will help work down to the ball. Also talk about using their hands to almost flick the ball, not swing with their front shoulder yanking their body out to swing the bat.
If you are watching a game on TV or in person here is some info on what to look for when watching a hitter\'s load.
When coaching pay attention to what part of the field your hitters are hitting the ball and where the pitch is located.
When a hitter is lunging at the ball he is making it more difficult to see and recognize the pitch, but also making it difficult to get the barrel of the bat to the ball on time.
The middle pitch can be hit anywhere in the field but good hitters usually will hit it right back up the middle.
These three basic fundamentals are the first things you should look for when coaching a hitter.
Diagnosing what is wrong with one of your hitters starts with making sure the hitter is seeing the ball.
Whether or a not a hitter is getting back and staying back should be the third thing you are paying attention too.
